Agneepath Remake: Hrithik-Priyanka to play most intense passion!

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 03:31 AM PST

Agneepath Remake: Hrithik-Priyanka to play most intense passion!: Karan Johar promises passion play like never before between Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra in his upcoming remake of Agneepath, which he will produce.

The movie will have Hrithik reprising the role of the angry man immortalized by Amitabh Bachchan in the original film by Mukul Anand. Priyanka, however, will not play a nurse, Big B's love interest in the original played by Madhavi. There have been rumours that Priyanka's character has been changed from a nurse to a prostitute, but Karan Johar denies it.

What he confirms emphatically is that there's going to be a smouldering chemistry between Hrithik and Priyanka in the film.

"The new 'Agneepath' is first and foremost an intense love story. There was love between Priyanka and Hrithik in 'Krissh'. But here we want an unparalleled intensity between them. You've never seen Priyanka and Hrithik get so intense with anyone before," Karan Johar is quoted as saying by a news agency.

The original film, made in 1990, was produced by Karan's dad Yash Johar.

Pics - Hrthik Roshan and Sussanne Khan gorgeous look at 'Koffee With Karan': When celebrities open up over coffee, it has to be on Karan Johar's show Koffee With Karan. The fourth season of the show has had its share of controversies but all went by in good humour. The Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne episode also throws up some serious talks and fun moments.
Sussanne looked lovely in a short, breezy Nandita Mahtani dress and also gave bold answers to Karan. When he asked Sussanne that what she would do if she wakes up as Gauri Khan, Sussanne delivered a volley and said: "I would quickly go and give Shahrukh a kiss on his lips." This one lady also seems to be a big fan of Shahrukh Khan and she is already a great friend to Gauri.

It's a common knowledge that the couple shares an amazing equation. The made-for-each-other couple is madly in love.

Box Office Report: 'Dhobi Ghat' open with mixed response

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 03:07 AM PST

Box Office Report: 'Dhobi Ghat' open with mixed response: Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's film Dhobi Ghat has opened to a mixed response at the box office. At some centres the film is doing very well; at others the response is lukewarm.
The film has opened particularly well at certain multiplexes in metros like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The best response to the film bordered on 80 to 90 percent occupancy in theatres. At worst, the film got a 30 percent response. Moreover, the film picked up at box office in the evening compared to its collections in the morning.

Trade pundits feel that film has enough momentum to recover its paltry production cost of Rs. 8 crore (including publicity costs) in the first week itself. Also Wednesday (Republic Day) being a holiday will work to the film's advantage.

On the other hand, the last week's release Yamla Pagla Deewana rounded off the first week with a collection of Rs. 35 crore, which is way above those of some big budget productions we've seen in the recent past.

Of course, the favourable audience response has prompted the Deols to make the film's sequel.

Aamir Khan very sad for Peepli Live out from the Oscars Race: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan Thursday said he is disappointed at "Peepli Live" failing to get selected at the Oscars but is happy that his film represented India.

"I came to know that 'Peepli Live' is out of Oscars. I am of course sad about it. But, I am happy that we represented India and we were one among the world's best 60 films which were sent to Oscars. We are disappointed and sad," Aamir told reporters at a press conference at the Sun and Sand hotel here.

The actor maintained that he doesn't make films for the Oscars.

"I don't make them for Oscars, neither for any other awards. I make films for the audience. I value whatever response I get from the audience, critics and media. Oscars, Cannes, Berlin Festival - they are like platforms where international audience come to know about our films. If you win there, more people watch them," said Aamir.

"Peepli Live", the directorial debut of Anusha Rizvi, explores the disparity between rural and urban India.

The film failed to make it in the list of nine movies selected for the next next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 83rd Academy Awards.

"Sasuraal Genda Phool" actress Ragini Khanna was in the danger zone along with Ankita, who was later heard saying - "How could I be eliminated?"

Shahid Kapoor reject an offer to do Priyanka Chopra's '7 Khoon Maaf'

Shahid Kapoor reject an offer to do Priyanka Chopra's '7 Khoon Maaf': When Priyanka Chopra has seven co-stars in her forthcoming film "7 Khoon Maaf", the question arises why isn't Shahid Kapoor, who shares an amazing onscreen chemistry with her and is reportedly her offscreen love, one of them? Well because he refused, revealed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj.

"Shahid refused to do the film. That time he was preparing for the role in his father's film and for that he needed a particular get up, so he didn't have time to get a new get up for this film," Bhardwaj told reporters at an event in the Radio City office here.

"7 Khoon Maaf" is based on Ruskin Bond's short story, "Susanna's Seven Husbands". The seven male leads in the thriller include Naseeruddin Shah as the oldest husband, John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah's youngest son Vivaan Shah as the youngest husband and Russian actor Aleksandr Dyachenko.

The director also revealed that Priyanka was his original choice for the role.

"Priyanka was my original choice for the role. She is the finest actor of her generation right now. Whe I worked with her in 'Kaminey', I realised how under-utilised she is. She has so much talent in her. As a director I had so much trust on her that I felt that no one else can essay this role as brilliantly as she would do," said Bhardwaj.

The film is slated for a Feb 18 release.

Shahrukh Khan-Aishwarya Rai spotted sharing light moment

Shahrukh Khan-Aishwarya Rai spotted sharing light moment: Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai were spotted sharing a light moment at the Filmfare nomination bash in Mumbai recently.
Shahrukh and Ash have had a chequered working relationship. Years ago, the duo who sparked a matchless chemistry in Devdas fell out after Ash's relationship woes with Salman Khan spilled over on the sets of the movie Chalte Chalte, following which Ash was dropped from the project and SRK vowed never to work with her again.

The freeze between them slowly thawed over the years but there have always been whispers of a lingering friction between the two. But at the nomination bash of Filmfare Awards, SRK and Ash were spotted without their respective spouses. There was no awkwardness between them. Rather, they shared a light moment, with SRK cracking his usual humour.

Pavitra Punia to play in a TV serial as ‘Jab We Met’s Kareena Kapoor

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 12:40 PM PST

Pavitra Punia to play in a TV serial as 'Jab We Met's Kareena Kapoor: After Pavitra Rishta, be ready to watch Pavitra Punia, the MTV Splitsvilla babe, as Kareena Kapoor in a TV serial based on the superhit Bollywood film Jab We Met. Director Imtiaz Ali is the man behind the show.

Cashing in on Geet, Imtiaz Ali has conceptualized a show for the channel Star Plus on his film Jab We Met which proved to be milestone in his career. Naturally, the TV serial's USP is Kareena's character Geet, and the role is bagged by the Splitsvilla 3 hottie Pavitra Punia, a model from Delhi, who became popular because of her glamorous look on small screen.

The serial is titled Love U Zindagi and will carry forward the lovely, chirpy character of Geet. Our suggestion to Pavitra is she better pull up her socks to fit in to the shoes of Kareena.

Karan Johar shocked by popularity of Madhuri Dixit!

Karan Johar shocked by popularity of  Madhuri Dixit!: When Karan Johar started seeking a fitting guest to accompany Madhuri Dixit on his show Koffee With Karan, he was shocked by the number of calls he got. Every other actress wanted to share the couch with Mads.

Sipping a cuppa with the one and only Madhuri Dixit sounds super-exciting to our young set of actresses. Karan tells a tabloid, "I can't say I'm amazed by Madhuri's popularity. When I decided to invite her on my show I didn't know that her popularity seeps down right to the youngest of Bollywood."

The TV show host was flooded with requests, and whenever any Bollywood babe called him, he knew what the reason behind that was. Karan couldn't decide whom he should call along side Madhuri. Now as per reports, it's Sonkashi Sinha who will get lucky to be with Mads on Karan's show.

But we think getting Dr Shriram Nene, husband of Madhuri, would have been a better choice as Karan's show mainly has had real-life couples and we can't remember when Madhuri came on a talk show with her dear hubby.

Aishwarya Rai wants to make pair of Katrina with Abhishek?

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 12:18 PM PST

Aishwarya Rai wants to make pair of Katrina with Abhishek?: Aishwarya Rai has become rather choosy in signing roles that pitch her alongside hubby Abhishek Bachchan.

May be it's a lesson hard learnt after the super debacle of Raavan, but Ash is wary of another professional faux pas and that's quite evident from the buzz that she's turned down director Vipul Amrutlal Shah's next film that would have paired her with hubby Abhi. Rather, we hear that she's recommended that Shah should go ahead and sign Katrina Kaif for the film.

Ash isn't in a rush to sign new projects with Abhi until and unless the project is unique and creatively satisfying enough to lure her into signing on the dotted line. And this is not the first role with Abhi that Ash has turned down.

She first declined to do Dostana opposite him and also turned down Abhinav Deo's Game with hubby dear.

Dhobi Ghat Movie Review - Kiran Rao's next film

Posted: 21 Jan 2011 07:47 AM PST

Dhobi Ghat Movie Review - Kiran Rao's next film: Dhobi Ghat is a film that will get diverse reactions from the viewers. Some will no doubt snore through it, some will keep shifting in their seats impatiently, and there are still others who'll be glued to the screen, unable to blink, totally sunk into the layered drama, the melancholy unravelling against the gentle, unnerving thrum of the most unique city in the world.
"Meri hamsafar, meri tawaif, meri jaan." That's how Arun (Aamir Khan) describes Mumbai. A reclusive painter with a mercurial temperament, he shifts into a run-down house in Old Mumbai to seek inspiration that he unexpectedly finds in the abandoned video diaries of a newly-wed Muslim woman Yasmeen (Kriti Malhotra), the Mumbai diaries recorded as letters to her brother back home in UP but never sent for reasons that remain obscure until the very end.

Shai (Monica Dogra) is a banker from the US, holidaying in Mumbai with her Canon digital still camera with which she hopes to record the daily lives of the aam aadmi - the dhobis, the hawkers, the perfume sellers, the night-watchmen. Munna (Prateik Babbar) is a dhobi with a dream to become an actor and a heart that throbs for Shai.

Among these four distinct characters, writer-director Kiran Rao weaves - warp and weft - a tale of intersecting lives, a tale of unrequited love, of one-night stand and the regret on the morning after, of hopes dashed and inspiration found, of loss and, ultimately, death. Dhobi Ghat is a film that calls for a different sensitivity from the viewer. It's not just content being another clichéd collage of vignettes of the city's streets and squalor, though there are many, thanks to the black-and-white snaps by Jyotika Jain. Nah! It leaps beyond that and takes a plunge into the lives of the characters, depicting their anxieties, desires and loss with nearly brutal realism but an empathetic heart.

It's surely not a film for the suckers of speed - the folks who trip on imaginative shot compositions, slick editing, brisk pace punctuated with quip-heavy dialogues and more such screenplay-savvy gimmickry. Kiran Rao puts the story above all. Simply and quite craftily she unravels it with no sense of urgency or desire to overwhelm the viewer. She takes her sweet time to let the story take roots on the screen, the tempo of the screenplay being just right for a film of this genre. It ambles on for a good hour and then slowly, creepily, explodes in its dying minutes into a denouement that's sure to give you a lump in the throat.

Performances are simply top-notch, though I felt a bit shortchanged by the Hindi-dubbed dialogues. Kriti Malhotra and Prateik Babbar are the pick of the lot. Kriti's transformation from a curious newcomer in Mumbai into a dejected, depressed housewife ruing her marriage is unsettling, to say the least. Prateik Babbar's gauche manners, rawness and his irresolute demeanour bring to life the character of the starry-eyed dhobi but the bashful lover that he plays. Aamir Khan's performance hinges mainly on his character's looks and expressions, for Arun is a guy who speaks in monosyllables. Monica Dogra's affected Hindi accent does grate on you for a bit, but her natural performance, more than her swoon-inducing natural beauty, makes up for it. And then there's the haunting score by the Argentinean composer Gustavo Santaolalla, giving the film a definitive identity.

Some viewers will doubtlessly whine about the film's pace. Others will grunt at the repeated regressions into the video diaries of Yasmeen. Agreed, but keep in mind that Dhobi Ghat isn't a film made with an eye on the box office. It's not designed to please everyone. It's a very personal ode, a melancholic one at that, to the city and the souls it houses. It's a film made from the heart, a film that restores a movie buff's faith in the cinema devoid of any vain opulence or pretension of art.

My advice: watch it if you happen to love cinema and think that there's more to it than entertainment, thrills, vanity, and ha-ha-he-he.
